Leadership Team First Visit to New Academy Build Site

This was an opportunity to gain an idea of the colossal size of the project. From the viewing platform it was possible to get an aerial view over the site whilst being able to get an overall impression of the scale of various parts of the project. It became quite clear at just how much pace the project is moving forward. During the visit we were informed that the last of the concrete casting is due to take place towards the end of June2010. Beyond this date it is antcipated the the steel erection will commence and it is hoped to have the roof secured by Christmas 2010.

AIM HIGHER VISIT to KCFM

Workshop 1 – Meet the presenters of the show.

In workshop 1, pupils met the presenters of the different radio station. Pupils were introduced to Ed Bretton, who presents the breakfast show and got chance to see him in action. 2 groups worked with Rob Langley, who presents the afternoon show. Rob discussed how a radio station is ‘pitched’ to certain audiences. For example, most of the Sirius Academy students listened to Galaxy Radio. Galaxy is aimed at the 14-25 age bracket, where as none of the students listened to KCFM, as that is pitched to an older audience of 25-35 years. 1 group worked with Dave Hudson, who was presenting the afternoon show and gave an on air ‘shout out’ to Sirius Academy students in his afternoon show. Pupils learnt how to mix the music and created and performed some ‘jingles’ for the radio station.

Workshop 2- Designing an advert.

Workshop 2 involved pupils working with the design team from KCFM, Ruth and Howard. Pupils has to design their own advert and created some amazing adverts, with the help of some professional ‘voice over’ actors. Sirius Academy students designed adverts for Chocolate Heaven, a chocolate making shop. A theme park called ‘Galaxy Star’ was situated on Uranus. A new underwater rollercoaster in Hull was created called Aqua Splash. Pupils’ imaginations were in overdrive as the imagery, use of alliteration and metaphors helped to make the adverts as realistic as possible. The Sirius Academy students also played a starring role in their own adverts. The ‘Chocolate Heaven’ team provided the mmmmmmmmm sound effects as the chocolate melted in the mouth. Hollie and Shannon made their singing debut as aliens riding the jet packs at the Galaxy Star theme park. The Aqua Splash team provided the piercing screams as the rollercoaster plunged into the River Humber.

Workshop 3 – News broadcasting. During workshop 3, pupils had to research and adapt a current story from the news in order for it to be broadcast in a 30 second news slot. Pupils worked with the news presenters in the news booth and read from the auto cue. Pupils’ news bulletins were recorded and played back to the student. The KCFM day was a real success and the pupils’ behaviour was exemplary. Amber from the station who looked after us said “this is the best behaved group of students we’ve ever had and they can come back any time”. Following the success of the day, Aim Higher are hosting a competition for all schools involved to compete against each other across the airwaves to find the best broadcasting school. You never know, if we win, it could lead to us having our very own ‘Radio Sirius’………

Year 9 RUGBY - SIRIUS ACADEMY CHAMPIONS, YORKSHIRE CUP FINAL

Sirius won the coin toss at Batley Bulldogs ground and chose to run up a hill with the gradient of Everest in the first half. Coaches Grayburn and Rust concured that a 12 point deficit at half time due to the slope would be acceptable. Nerves and over ambition played a part in Sirius putting themselves under a lot of pressure in their half and the opposition scored on the right after 15 minutes but missed the kick. The boys learnt from their early mistakes and began to gain field position but they were unable to score. Super League referee Ben Thaler (a late replacement for an unfortunate youngster who sprained his ankle) penalised Sirius heavily for offside and a high tackle but blood and guts defence saw Sirius hold out and the half time score was 0 - 4.

Visibly lifted, the Sirius boys led fantastically by Jansin Turgat and halfback Jordan Abdul began to impose themselves on the National Champions and a break followed by good footwork saw Turgat touch down and with Abdul converting Sirius led 6 - 4.

Brooksbank were finding it difficult to get out of their half and Sirius defence out wide nullified the threat of star centre Zac. The pressure finally told on Brooksbank when Turgat took a pass in midfield and step back inside 2 players to touch down near the posts will Abdul again converting. The score was 12 - 4 will 15 minutes to go. The Sirius parents and staff were rocking in the stands two minutes late as clever play created space for Adams on half way and he blasted through two tacklers and sprinted 50 metres to touch down under the posts. Robinson goaled to leave Sirius 18 - 4 up with 13 minutes to go. SURELY BROOKSBANK COULD NOT RAISE A FIGHTBACK FROM HERE!

Great individual play from drop goal hero Cruz (Brooksbank No.6) saw him sidestep two defenders, chip over the top and regather to score next to the posts. Amazingly they missed the kick - how costly would that be in the long run.

Sirius started to panic and drop off tackles and the Brooksbank fullback went through 3 attempted tackles to score a dubious try under the posts (spectators queried whether the ball had been touched down on the line). After the conversion Sirius led 18 - 14 with 44 seconds on the clock. Amazingly Brooksbank made it up the other end of the field and Cruz dummied his way over in the corner on the final. ON NO NOT AGAIN. Cruz lined up his conversion from an acute angle knowing that success meant a victory for Brooksbank and yet more despair for Sirius. He missed and the teams began Golden Point extra time (first point the winner). After 5 agonising minutes with both teams dropping the ball through sheer exhaustion, Sirius set up the opportunity for Abdul to attempt a drop goal from 25 metres and amazingly he slotted the ball through the posts to seal victory for Sirius.

YORKSHIRE CHAMPIONS YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

Hull Schools U16s Cup Final

An air of excitement as a coach full of the football players and fans travelled to Hull University for the Hull Schools U16s Cup Final.

Due to great performances in the previous rounds the Year 11 students were deservedly there to play against strong opponents in Malet Lambert Specialist Language College. Before the match you could tell the students were nervous and also excited to be in a final as it was the quietest they'd ever been. The students looked good in the warm up and were really up for the game.

As the game got underway you could see Malet were up for it and countless attacks saw some good defending early on from the back four of Sirius. The great defending was then undone by a lucky goal from Malet Lambert opened the scoring. Sirius did not let their heads go down and carried the fight to Malet with a few attacks of their own. Ryan Russell showed some great pace upfront constantly hounding their defence not giving them a second on the ball. Malet then scored another after a quick counter attack.

At 2-0 I could see the students heads dropping but the brilliant crowd made up of pupils, staff and the Principal cheered them on and the game could of still gone either way. The game was very open at this point and good attacking play from both sides saw for an interesting game in the second half. Five minutes from half time Malet scored a third. This was undeserved as the students did really well closing them down and keeping them out for long periods of the half.

Second half the students knew they were up against it but they came out as if it was a completely different game and the attitude of the team was tremendous. They could of gone out second half with the defeatest attitude but the effort and the character shown from the lads was brilliant. The crowd was fantastic cheering every kick, every tackle and every shot. The individual efforts of Easter at the back, Russell upfront, and Moss in the middle of the park was fantastic. The second half was a great battle with both teams scoring once. Drabarek with the Sirius goal gave us a lifeline 10 minutes from the end but Malet were good enough to hold us out. Great team performance and even though we lost the game 4-1 I was extremely proud of the squad of players.

Overall an amazing season has seen us beat teams we never expected to and just to see the players grow individually and as a group of players was fantastic.

Cruising to GCSE Success

Monday 29th March, thirty Year 11 students, Principal Dr Cathy Taylor and staff boarded the P&O North Sea Ferry " Pride of Rotterdam" bound for Holland to take part in two revision sessions on board ship plus visits to the Nemo Science Centre and Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Students worked hard for several hours on both the outward and return journey in the business/ conference suite on board the ferry. Science students revised specifically GCSE, AQA & OCR coursework whilst English students worked on descriptive and creative writing based on the Diary of Anne Frank as well as cultural poems in order to maximise their potential outcomes in the forthcoming examinations. All students thoroughly enjoyed the visits and were keen to have the individual personalised learning time in very small groups or one to one. Many commented on how beneficial the time and visit had been. Furthermore, P&O staff commented on how polite and mature our students were. Well done Year 11 !

Mathematics Intervention / Johnny Ball

Mr Johnny Ball, BBC TV presenter from the 80's and excellent mathmetician gave two presentations to Year 11 GCSE mathematics students, Tuesday 23rd March 2010. His delivery to students was engaging, witty and very visual. Students participated in the explanations of various mathematical theories in order to gain a deeper understanding. The talks, 75 minutes for each of the 2 sessions were inspirational and will undoubtedly have contributed to the exam success of our students in the forthcoming examinations.

Upon arrival at the Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough the students made their way through the 4 star Crown Spa Hotel into the Consort Suite. The students worked very hard, completing tasks in both English and Maths before their evening dinner. The evening involved the students visiting the Stephen Joseph Theatre to see “And a Nightingale Sang” where they were commended for their excellent behaviour by members of the audience. The students then returned to the hotel for ”Singstar” before retiring for the evening. Outstanding learning and progress were demonstrated by all, including commendations regarding behaviour and attitude from hotel staff and the general public. The Students worked diligently and enthusiastically for many hours, applying themselves whole heartedly to the tasks set. They enjoyed persuasive reading techniques and writing creatively whilst giving fantastic feedback throughout the weekend. Everyone was proud of their achievements, felt that they had benefitted fully and conducted themselves superbly. All students completed the Maths revision session again to a very high standard. Staff and students relaxed prior to their return by talking a walk along the promenade culminating in having a late fish and chip lunch before boarding the coach home. It was a very productive weekend, the staff were proud of the students and the students all enjoyed the weekend. Now bring on the examinations!

Yr 9 Champion Schools Yorkshire Semi Final Rugby League Result

An incredible performance by the boys today. The extra training done during the holidays with Mr Grayburn was evident today with lots of 'crash bangs' ‘face balls' and 'scoots' on show. The result was made even better because of the achievements of the David Lister squad last year. We await the result of the other semi final but it is likely to be Brooksbank who won the national final last year Mr A Rust

“Sirius Academy
will be a really exciting place to learn,” promises new Principal, Dr Cathy
Taylor. “It will be a fantastic learning environment, with opportunities for
everyone to try new and interesting educational experiences and where every
student will be helped to achieve the best they can.”

Over the summer holidays, Dr Taylor
and Sirius Academy staff have been working
tirelessly to put the curriculum and pastoral care in place, ready for the
arrival of students in September.

Building on the best

Sirius Academy was formerly Pickering High School
Sports College. All PHS students, along with many of the staff, have
transferred to the Academy. Students will wear a smart new uniform with a tie
in their house colours. New Academy branding and a vibrant logo will be visible
everywhere.

There has also been a huge
investment in upgrading the learning environment which will have a real impact
on students' perception of their new school.

Significant changes students will notice include the
reception area which has been completely upgraded and refreshed. Most of
the old part of the school has been redecorated and re-carpeted. Two
classrooms have been equipped with new furniture that students will be trying
out

“Our thanks go to Hull City
Council staff who have worked so hard over the summer to prepare the building,”
says Dr Taylor.

A number of new staff have joined
the Academy. GwenMountain joins as VP
Student Support and Progress. Lynne Richardson, VP Quality, has been seconded
from the Academy’s sponsor, Hull
College, strengthening
links with the college. Allyson Donaghue joins as AVP Environmental Science.

“As soon as we open our doors, our
students will be part of a new and stimulating way of learning. We have built
on all the very good, positive aspects of Pickering,
especially the passion and energy of the teaching staff. On top of this, we
have introduced innovations in the curriculum and approach to learning which
will enrich our students’ experience of secondary education,” says Dr Taylor.

Students will continue to be based in
PHS’s existing building until 2011 when all students will move into brand new
state-of-the-art premises.

The newly built school will be co-located
with Ganton special school in the first wave of new ‘learning centres’ to be
built under the £465m city-wide ‘Building Schools for the Future’ (BSF)
investment to transform learning across the city. It will also house the
Education Service for Hearing and Vision (ESHV).

Sport and Environment specialisms

Sirius Academy will have a dual specialism in Environmental
Science and Sport, which will help raise standards and improve examination
results. In the new building, students will be taught in a very modern and well
equipped learning environment that will boast contemporary science and
innovative ICT facilities, and its own recording studio, performing arts suite
and hair salon.

As part of the BSF Programme, architects
have created an inspirational design which should provide students with
outstanding opportunities.

The community will be able to use Sirius Academy’s
outstanding sports and leisure facilities, including a six-court sports hall. This
forms the first part of what is hoped will become a new learning village in the
heart of the West Area of Hull, driving forward transformational changes for
the future.

As a trainee teacher, she did her teaching practice at Kingston School, which became Pickering High School and will soon become Sirius Academy.

Alexandra Henderson, Chair of Sirius Academy Trustee Board, said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Cathy Taylor. She impressed us enormously with her passion and enthusiasm for learning and individual student achievement. She is also wholeheartedly committed to engaging the entire community with the Academy.”

Dr Taylor, 39, is currently head of Peele Community College in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, where standards of academic achievement have risen significantly under her leadership. Previously, as head of science at The John Spendluffe Technology College, she was instrumental in turning round a science department that was judged to be at ‘serious weakness’. Her achievement led to a consultancy role with the CfBT, advising on national science teaching strategy.

As principal of Sirius Academy, Dr Taylor’s top priority will be to drive up standards, introducing an innovative curriculum supported by targets for achievement, attendance and behaviour. She said: “I am passionate about providing students with opportunities to enable them to achieve or exceed their individual potential. I believe every child has that right.”

Development plans for the Academy will create a modern, 21st century learning environment where traditional values are part of the culture. “The sponsors and I agree that this is a very important aspect of the Academy. We will have an inclusive ethos where every student is treated as an individual and where we show respect, honesty and integrity to each other.”

Dr Taylor will also lead the integration of the Academy with the local community. Her plans include developing partnerships with students, families and local stakeholders, and making Academy facilities available to all after school hours.

Winning Friends at Sirius

The 1st Sirius open evening saw two friends awarded winners of the 'Tie the Tie' competition, Charlotte Young and Romy Hoskin from Bethune Primary School were very proud of their winning times, who in turn managed 6.76 seconds and 9.64 seconds. The girls both received HMV vouchers.

The evening was a great success which gained extremely positive feedback from parents and potential learners. Comment cards highlighted key strengths such as feeling welcomed and informed as well as the evening been interesting and interactive.

Teachers will be watching out for the perfect ties from both of these in September 2009……

A bright new brand

Firstly a competition was launched in mid-June to design the new academy logo. Postcards detailing the competition were sent out to all Key Stage 3 students. This was followed by an online vote on the new design, before a shortlist was presented to a judging panel for the final decision.

Within the coloured icon, there is a visual reference to the positioning of the stars in a constellation, circling together to reach the point of the ‘top star – the dog star’ – the successful student.

Green is the color of nature. It symbolises growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety.

The two constellation paths represent the dual specialism of Sirius
Academy (Sport & Science). The points within the inner
constellation represent the students and the three schools which will
make up Sirius Academy. The four points of the outer constellation
represent those who will support the students in their route to
success: Parents; Teachers; Community; Stakeholders.

Watch our for the new brand on buses around the city...

Stars of the future

The winning name was suggested by Year 7 learner, Dez Greenwood, who chose The Sirius Academy; Sirius being the brightest star in the night sky which also provides an appropriate link to the Academy’s subject specialisms of sport and environmental science.

Hull College Chief Executive and Principal, Elaine McMahon, said “The new Sirius Academy will be at the heart of the local community and the naming competition helped to ensure that individuals and groups had an opportunity to influence and share their views on the academy development as part of the consultation process.”

Dez, aged 12, hopes to work for NASA when he is older and has been rewarded with a new iPod nano for his winning entry. He explained why he chose the name Sirius, “I knew that Sirius was the brightest star because my Dad teaches me a lot about the stars and science. I think the competition was a really great idea. It gave us the chance to talk about how the Academy will be different for learners, what it needs to be about, plus we had brilliant fun thinking of the names”.

Dez’s Head teacher Elaine Wadsworth added, “It is fitting that Sirius is the name of the brightest star in the night sky – something we want all our young people to be, bright stars of the future.”

David Martin, Hull BSF Project Director, said “I am delighted with the choice of name and the approach to naming the new Academy, paving the way for how the Academy will engage students, staff and the community in transforming learning.”

The new Academy, due to open in September 2009, will offer a broad and balanced curriculum, focusing on subject specialisms of sport and environmental science.

Sirius Academy is the new name for a new place of learning and a new age of opportunity for all.

A fresh approach that’s about unlocking our children’s potential, with no limits on their talents and no barriers to their dreams.

Change is coming … and you could be a part of it right from the start.
