Guidance/Support

Pastoral Support

  • The learner support structure in the Academy will reflect the outstanding practice which has proved to be so successful at Hull College. One-to-one coaching for all learners will be carried out through a robust and age appropriate tutorial programme.
  • A key part of this programme will be individual advice and guidance undertaken on a fortnightly basis to ensure that learning and attainment is consistently on track. This will actively support the development of a positive dialogue between parents and the Academy. Another crucial element of this tutorial programme will be equipping learners with the language and tools to quickly adapt them to the new ways of learning which will characterise this Academy.
  • Tutor groups will ‘own’ the learning spaces used for tutorial time and will assume responsibility for display, recycling and the overall management of this environment.
  • Personal tutors will act as coaches for learners in their tutor group.
  • Personal tutors will support learners in articulating their needs through learner Voice.
  • Personal tutors will work with learners to actively care for their environment.
  • Learner support also includes the targeted support that specific students may need either at key points in their learning or because they have special needs. As part of fully-inclusive practice, the Academy will not have an SEN base which provides for the needs of such learners, although there will be a team of highly-professional and well-qualified support staff. These staff will work with tutors to design appropriately differentiated learning and will offer direct support for students in the learning environment to ensure that learners with SEN are fully included within each ‘school’.
  • We recognise that there may be occasions when specific intervention strategies are required to support individuals. This could include supported literacy development or a behaviour management programme to support learners in accessing the full learner entitlement.
  • This provision will require a different approach to the learning programme for these individuals, which will be discussed at the fortnightly coaching and review sessions with learners and communicated to parents by pastoral tutors. These strategies will be designed into the learning programme for individuals and groups rather than stigmatising learners by withdrawing them from mainstream learning. All interventions of this nature will be designed to maximise individual learning, achievement and attainment.

Pastoral Support and Parents

Specific issues regarding progression and welfare will be addressed with the learners’ teaching team and parents to aid progression and development of every child.
